Teaching Maritime Knowledge in Second Life

Sailing in Second Life
Mercator projectionMany real life sailors sail a Taco in SL, the famous sail simulation. Talking to them you will hear: If only we had had something like that when we learnt to sail, it would all have been so much easier.

Navigation classes in SL
Why don't you go on with this idea and provide real, true navigation classes on this platform?

We, as an adult education institute, do that since early 2008 with great success. And it's great fun!

Ships, lighthouses, radio equipment, all can be built in SL and used for teaching, interactive and free to use for the students.

Teaching Maritime Knowledge in the Virtual 3D World of Second Life
Walking on a sea map, inspect all the buoys in nature size, that's not possible in a real life classroom. But it's easy in SL. This is learning with all senses; students listen, hear, and see, and with their avatars they even get a feeling about what they learn.

My best example is that of the mercator projection, used for sea maps.
In real life teaching this is hard to teach. In SL all the avatars know how to attach a texture to an object. So if I give them the texture of the earth and they apply it to a rectangle and to a sphere … all is done almost without further explanation.

All information, classes and events on our vhs Sim in Second Life are only in German!
